History And CEO Update
MTN, formerly known as M-Cell, was founded in 1994 with support from the South African government. The company’s inception saw Leena Jaitley as one of its founders, and in 1995, Robert (Bob) Chaphe took over as CEO, succeeding John Beck. By 2001, Irene Charnley had assumed the role of chairperson, while Johnnic Holdings held the majority ownership stake in the company. Notably, Paul Edwards, who had invested in expanding the company into Nigeria, was succeeded as CEO in 2002 by Phuthuma Nhleko.
