How Globacom Nigeria Limited was Established – A Short Story

The success stories in the Telecom sector are, however, not complete without referring to the frontline role played by Globacom Limited, Nigeria’s indigenous telecommunication company.

Globacom Limited, popularly known as Glo, is the product of the entrepreneurial brilliance of one of Nigeria’s top billionaire and businessman, Mike Adenuga, who diversified from the oil sector into Nigeria’s telecommunication sector in 1999 and secured a conditional GSM license in the same year.

Mike Adenuga began his career as a crude oil investor. He recognized the potential of Nigeria’s burgeoning oil industry and began asking for a license in the late 1980s.

He didn’t receive one, though, until General Ibrahim Babangida’s regime’s Oil Minister, Professor Jubril Aminu, instituted a new policy permitting private individuals to engage in oil exploitation and exploration.

In 1990, he got the drilling permit and launched exploring in Ondo state with his new business, Consolidated Oil (CONOIL).

Same also, Mr. Adenuga saw a new opportunity in the telecommunications sector in the middle of the 1990s. In 1999, he worked hard to win the Federal Government’s conditional GSM license and later founded Globacom in August 29, 2003 after receiving permission to do so.

Globacom is a privately-owned telecommunications company founded by Mr. Mike Adenuga. It was established in 2003 and is headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. Globacom has since expanded its operations to other African countries, including Ghana, Benin, and Côte d\’Ivoire.

Globacom offers a wide range of telecommunications services, including mobile voice and data services, broadband internet, fixed-line services, and enterprise solutions. Glo Nigeria has been known for introducing innovative products and services to the Nigerian telecom market. For example, they were among the first to offer per-second billing, which significantly changed billing practices in the Nigerian telecom industry. Glo has made significant investments in expanding its network coverage across Nigeria. It boasts of being one of the largest 4G LTE networks in the country, providing high-speed internet access to many urban and rural areas. The company has also invested in undersea fiber-optic cables to enhance its international connectivity.

Fibre-Optic: Globacom made history in 2011 when it became the first single business to construct a $800 million high-capacity undersea fiber-optic connection known as Glo-1, the first successful submarine cable from the United Kingdom to Nigeria.

Sports and Entertainment: Glo is active in sports and entertainment sponsorships in Nigeria. They have sponsored major football events, including the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), and have signed endorsement deals with prominent Nigerian celebrities.

Globacom Future Looks Promising

Like other telecom companies in Nigeria, Glo has faced challenges such as network congestion, quality of service issues, and regulatory changes. These challenges have led to occasional complaints from customers, but the company has continued to invest in infrastructure to improve its services.
